How to Prepare Your Property for Tree Removal Day

By Oak City Tree Services Team ยท February 10, 2026 ยท Raleigh, NC

A little preparation goes a long way. When you set your property up correctly before the crew arrives, jobs go faster, your property is better protected, and there are no surprises. Here's exactly what to do.

1

Clear the Access Path

Our equipment needs to reach the tree. Remove vehicles from the driveway and any area between the street and the tree. Fold in your side mirrors if cars must remain nearby. Move outdoor furniture, grills, planters, and any decorative items from around the base and in the path of the work zone.

2

Mark Underground Utilities

Before any digging, stump grinding, or root work, confirm that underground utilities (gas, water, electrical, cable) have been marked. Call 811 (NC 811) at least 3 business days before stump grinding or root cutting. We will not grind stumps without utility confirmation.

3

Keep Pets and Children Indoors

Tree removal is loud, unpredictable, and involves heavy equipment moving at all times. Keep all pets and children inside throughout the entire workday โ€” not just during cutting. Debris and equipment movement continue throughout cleanup.

4

Protect Nearby Plants and Gardens

We work carefully around landscaping, but stump grinding throws chips up to 30 feet and heavy equipment can compact soil around nearby plants. Cover garden beds adjacent to the work zone with tarps or boards if possible. Communicate any specific protection needs at your estimate.

5

Confirm Gate Access if Applicable

If our equipment needs to access your backyard through a gate, ensure the gate is unlocked and the path is clear on the morning of service. Many Raleigh neighborhoods have 6-foot privacy fences with limited access points โ€” confirm clearances at your estimate.

6

Communicate Special Instructions

Tell us at scheduling time if you have specific needs: neighbor awareness, HOA notifications required, city permits still pending, specific debris destinations, log preservation requests, or timing restrictions. Don't wait until the crew is on-site.

7

Plan for Noise and Duration

Tree removal is loud. Work at height involves a chipper, saw, and occasional impact from falling material. Plan accordingly if you work from home. Duration depends on tree size: small trees 1โ€“2 hours; large trees 4โ€“8 hours. We give estimated time windows at scheduling.

FAQs โ€” Tree Removal Day

What should I do with my car on tree removal day?

Move all vehicles completely away from the work zone โ€” out of the driveway and any area where debris could fall. Our equipment needs to maneuver and falling branches can travel unexpectedly.

Will tree removal damage my lawn?

Heavy equipment can leave tire ruts in soft soil, especially after recent rain. We communicate scheduling concerns proactively. Some minor lawn disturbance is normal on large removals. Stump grinding produces a mound of wood chips that can be spread or removed.

Do I need to be home during tree removal?

You don't need to be home, but if you are, stay inside. If you need to be present for access (gate codes, locked areas), please be available at job start time. We can coordinate gate access codes in advance.

What happens to the wood after removal?

Unless requested otherwise, we chip brush and haul all debris. Logs can be left on-site if you want firewood โ€” just let us know at estimate. Stump grindings can be left as mulch or hauled away.

How long after removal can I plant a new tree?

After removal, wait 2โ€“3 months for the root system to decompose partially. After stump grinding, wait 6โ€“12 months before replanting in the same spot โ€” the wood chip mixture needs time to break down. We can advise on ideal replanting timing for your specific situation.
