How Stump Grinding Works
Stump grinding is a mechanical process that eliminates the visible portion of a stump quickly and with minimal disruption to the surrounding yard. Here's exactly how Oak City handles stump removal from start to finish.
Our commercial stump grinder uses a rotating cutting wheel studded with hardened carbide teeth. The operator guides the wheel back and forth across the stump, progressively chipping the wood into small particles. Unlike hand tools or DIY rentals, our professional equipment has the power and torque to handle even the hardest, largest stumps — including Loblolly Pines with rock-hard root zones and massive White Oaks with dense, interlocked grain.
We grind stumps to a depth of 6–12 inches below grade — far deeper than the typical 4–6 inches achieved by rental units. This depth eliminates the visible stump, prevents regrowth from adventitious buds at the base, and creates a depression that can be filled with topsoil and reseeded. The grinding process produces a pile of wood chip debris that can be used as landscape mulch (we spread it for you on request) or loaded and hauled away.
Most stump grinding jobs take 30 minutes to 2 hours. A small Crepe Myrtle or Bradford Pear stump in an open yard can be ground in under 30 minutes. A large, aged Water Oak or Loblolly Pine stump can take 1–2 hours due to their sheer size and wood density. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we provide your free quote.
